My hair has been relaxed since the end of sixth grade. Since then, it’s always been struggling to graze my collarbones. I wanted it to grow but was stuck between not really knowing how and not caring, brushing it into ponytail almost every day. (About four years of this and you can imagine how my hair looks now :) I’ve been thinking about it a while, and a few people in my life went natural. That’s only added to my interest. I agree with David (9th July comment) with regard to diet. Whole grains can indeed have the effect of spiking blood sugar (whole grain bread as just one example) and creating gut inflammation, and therefore low-grade, sub-acute inflammation in general. This is the biggest contributor to chronic disease that we are facing, long-term inflammation. The standard food pyramid is, in my opinion, all wrong. I believe we should eat a more Mediterranean diet, and minimise the grain-based carbohydrates, and the sugars. Then we are considerably further down the track towards a healthy diet that promotes longevity. Of course, all of the other factors mentioned are important as well, but what we put into our mouths is probably the most important, given the skyrocketing rates of obesity first world countries are facing, and now even asian countries as well, who are well and truly catching up.

Before you do anything, you need to decide if you want to big chop or transition to natural hair. If you are already experiencing breakage, don’t brush your hair. If you are not hydrating or moisturizing your hair while in braids or weave, that can explain the dryness you are experiencing. Hello my name is Terrianna I am 18 years old and attending college (staying on campus). I need hair help. I’ve done the big chop a 2 years ago. Detox – If you are new to natural shampooing or no ‘poo then you have to be prepared for a detox phase. Commercial shampoos strip your hair and scalp of their natural oils, which is why most people feel the need to shampoo daily. As your hair is stripped of oils the body signals for the scalp to produce more. In other words: The harsher the shampoo the more oils your body produces. As you wean yourself from commercial shampoos it will take time for your body to re-balance itself and stop producing so much oil. In the meantime you can expect extra grease and general “gross” hair until your body balances back out. This can take anywhere from 2 – 9 weeks. (Yep… this is not for the faint of heart.) The good news is that once your body finds its balance you can expect more manageable hair with only “shampooing” every couple of days (or even only once or twice a week.)

Hi my name is Brenda and I am transitioning. It has been about 8 months since I have had a relaxer in my hair. I recently started using As I am, about 2 days ago. After finding that cantu jus don’t work for me. I am looking for a good regimen. I guess what I am saying is that I am clueless about going natural. I do know that I have a curl pattern already and my hair is thick and course. I do trim my hair about every month but I do know the perm is still on my ends or shall I say through out my hair. As far as a regimen I don’t have one. I just wash my hair once a week with Tressme and conditioner with tressemee, then I put the leave in conditioner–As I Am following with the As I Am double butter cream. Then I put twist in it. I take the twist out daily and re-twist. Please Help!!!!!!!
There are still plenty of people who are loving the whole No ‘Poo thing, and the key (I believe) is a good Apple Cider Vinegar Rinse as it will help balance the scalp after the harsher baking soda wash. I personally love the “pumped up” from Reformation Acres. If you don’t want to go all out, you can always just use a couple tablespoons of apple cider vinegar diluted in about a cup of water to rinse.

Carolyn, agree completely, a plant-based Mediterranean style diet is the best diet for health. That includes some whole grains, ideally in intact form (such as farro, quinoa, and brown rice), some healthy proteins and fats (legumes, nuts, seeds, fish, chicken), and mostly fruits and veggies. Refined grains, like white flour and sugar, and everything made from them (bread, pastas, backed goods, cereals, et cetera) are the real culprit.

I wear my hair in cornrows everyday with a wig on top. I will spray Carol’s Daughter hair milk refresher spray on my hair then apply any moisturizing creme I may have to give it moisture. Those cremes could be Cantu leave in conditioner, Carol’s Daughter Black Vanilla hair sheen, Kera Care Butter Cream, or Cantu’s Tea Tree & Jojoba hair & scalp oil.

Observational studies have shown that people who engage in mentally stimulating activities may be less likely to develop dementia. When performing your energy system training (cardio training), always try to push the intensity of your work intervals. If using a rate of perceived exertion scale to monitor intensity, your work intervals should fall between 7 and 8.5 (i.e., very hard to very, very hard) during your session. Perform as many of your work intervals at the higher end of the RPE range for fastest and best results. (Also try HIIT training, which comes with tons of benefits.)
These two cleansers are very commonly used for natural hair care as both do a wonderful job of cleansing impurities and conditioning hair. Mix either the juice of one lemon or two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar with 1 cup of warm water and rinse through hair then comb through. You can use this on it’s own or after shampooing for extra cleansing and conditioning. If you decide to transition, you won’t begin to see a difference in your hair until you reach the point of when you’d typically get a relaxer. What happens is that your new growth, which is your natural hair, will continue to grow out as it normally would. However, this time, you won’t get a relaxer. During your transition, you will take care/maintain both your natural hair/new growth and your relaxed ends.

Hey Kate. Im 16 and I’ve been transitioning since April 2013. The back of my hair is natural but the front still has some relaxed ends. I get braids & leave them in for 2 or 3 months. & I oil my scalp 2 twice a Week. When I take my hair out I usually get blowouts at a Dominican salon & have them cut off some of my ends. This helps you not have to big chop until you have enough growth
I heard of a trick for trimming hair. I don’t know if it works on 4c hair. The trick was to braid your hair in medium to large braids all over your head. The part of the braid that is thin and sparse is the part to cut off. Do you recommend doing this. The reason I ask is because there are not very many natural hair salons in the area that I live in and I don’t like spending money on hair unless it’s a really good hair product.
Damage to the hair must be trimmed away or grown out. For example, there is not a permanent cure for split-ends. There are some conditioners that can essentially patch split-ends and make them less visible, but over a period of time those split-ends will reappear. The only way to permanently get rid of your split-ends is to trim them away. You should absolutely never burn away your split-ends.

Also, I forgot to mention stay away from products with Petroleum Jelly, Mineral Oil (liquefied petroleum jelly), paraffin, silicones and sulfates to the best of your ability. A lot of products purporting to be good for our hair list one of the above as (among) the first ingredients in the product, but honestly it is a cheap bulking ingredient that offers no nutritional value to your hair whatsoever. They make for excellent barriers to moisture once applied on your hair/scalp but it’s also tantamount to wrapping yourself in cling film, not allowing your pores to breathe and to be hydrated by the water in the atmosphere.

Hi Missqeetee – On average, it is estimated that hair grows about 1/2 inch per month. This means that (if you’re the average person) your will have the possibly of 1/2 inch of growth per month that will be natural hair. It really depends on how long your hair is to determine how long it will take to grow out the relaxer (along with the growth rate). Take your current length and divide it by 1/2. This will give you a good estimate. This doesn’t account for the amount of length actually retained, which could be less than 1/2 inch per month.
I too have transitioned into the natural world without the BIG chop. I didn’t want to lose my length for those moments when I want to straighten my hair or rock a messy bun. It’s rough because now you have to deal with shrinkage closer to the roots and loose strands surrounding, but it is doable. I’ve been natural now for 1 year…and I absolutely LOVE my hair!! My nautal highlights are very profound and it’s very flattering. Especially since I’ve noticed my hair gets lighter as I get older. I have natural auburn and blonde highlights mixed heavily into my sandy brown hair. It’s always been naturally lighter in the warmer months, but it’s now lighter all year. Most of the protective styles that I see involve having the hair pulled back/up. This is great for protecting ends, but is there a protective style to protect edges? Right now I have my hair in twists and loose.

Take a hot Epsom salt bath for 15 to 20 minutes to help your body recover. Magnesium sulfate, its scientific name, has been shown to help muscles relax and reduce inflammation. Epsom salts are a strong vasodilator, which means they will increase blood flow to the muscles as well as the surface of the skin. Plus, the magnesium absorbed through your skin helps build strong bones, manufactures proteins, and releases energy from muscles, in addition to numerous other benefits. Hi there – I would recommend using a clarifying shampoo to remove product buildup if any. Follow up with a moisturizing deep conditioner. From there, every 1-2 days, use the LOC or LOC method to moisturize your hair (try both to see which one works best for your hair). Wash your hair with a gentle shampoo and use a moisturizing deep conditioner every week. Follow the directions on the packaging. Avoid silicones. Examine your ends every 6-8 weeks and trim if needed. Use a gentle clarifying shampoo once a month or so. There is so much info out there about various routines, but this is a simple start that you can add to and adjust as you go. Keeping a journal to track what works and what doesn’t is great advice. Best of luck!
