I’m so glad I found your page. I’ve been natural for 2 years and need all the tips I can get, to grow my hair even longer, softer, and easier to manage hair. I am doing my best to not cave and get a relaxer but its hard. How do you sleep on your hair without tangling up? What’s the best styles to prevent breakage of ends and edges? Also does anyone know of a good natural hair stylist here in Phoenix, AZ?
I agree with David (9th July comment) with regard to diet. Whole grains can indeed have the effect of spiking blood sugar (whole grain bread as just one example) and creating gut inflammation, and therefore low-grade, sub-acute inflammation in general. This is the biggest contributor to chronic disease that we are facing, long-term inflammation. The standard food pyramid is, in my opinion, all wrong. I believe we should eat a more Mediterranean diet, and minimise the grain-based carbohydrates, and the sugars. Then we are considerably further down the track towards a healthy diet that promotes longevity. Of course, all of the other factors mentioned are important as well, but what we put into our mouths is probably the most important, given the skyrocketing rates of obesity first world countries are facing, and now even asian countries as well, who are well and truly catching up.
"Healthy living" to most people means both physical and mental health are in balance or functioning well together in a person. Thanks for sharing your experience! Based on what you have shared, you are on the right track. I would like to also encourage you to use products that work best for your hair and that gives you the results you are looking for. A product that works great for one natural maybe completely wrong for another. So I encourage both you and A to experiment and let your hair decide what products you need to use or avoid.

I really appreciate this site…you have a lot of great info. Currently, I have ended my transition a couple of weeks ago when I cut off the remaining relaxed ends. I transitioned for 14 months. I thought my transition was over…think I was wrong. Half of my hair is nice and curly (right side). The ends are curly…it’s just beautiful! And then on my left side..I don’t know what happened. It’s slightly wavy but the ends are straight! I just want to find out where it all went wrong and what I failed to do. I thought it might be heat damaged but wouldn’t that be visible on both sides? Will it all eventually be the same? It was heart breaking to have made this discovery bc I desperately wanted to do the WnG’s or at least have my hair roughly in a uniform curl pattern. Plz help!

The great ability of a twa is that the style within itself is a protective style. The hairs are tightly together packed down and the hair is not brushing the shoulders. So in essence, a TWA is a protective style within itself. The idea is to be sure to protect your hair at night and keep it moisturized and supple and using protein when you need to. You didn’t mention protein. How are you incorporating protein into your regimen.

You mentioned breakage. Aside from the breakage from weaves and braids, they are probably experiencing breakage at the line of demarcation (were the relaxer meets the natural hair). This is definitely one of the weakest points of the hair during transitioning. If this is the case, I would definitely suggest deciding whether you prefer to wear your hair straight or wear it curly. This will help minimize the stress that is put on maintaining more than one type of hair on the head. Also, keep the hair conditioned as much as possible.

I’ve been natural(no relaxer) for about 5 years but in those 5 years I have consistently worn a weave never giving my natural hair time to breath or be treated. I have recently decided to give the weave a break and show my hair some TLC because it needs it badly. My hair is veryy thick and not short, it actually looks and feels a bit healthy until I blow dry it then it feels brittle and very dry. Also my edges are a big problem they are so thin and brittle. I am wondering what tips you have for someone who is not necessarily newly natural but transitioning from weave/braids?

Some special foods have been suggested for weight maintenance. However, the roles of specific foods are not confirmed.
hi I have really thick hair and its about 4 or 5inches right now but the only thing is ,is that i have been experiencing thinning towards the back of my head and i dont know why .And it grows at a significantly slower rate than the rest ofmy hair.ive had to wear a cap for the past couple weeks because im afraid it might all break off or fall out. if you have any advice for me please email me back
Unfortunately, there is no ONE recipe that’s perfect for everyone. Especially because we live in a very toxic world there are just so many reasons why it might not be the best shampoo for you. I’ve had a lot of people tell me how much they love using baking soda, or my original shampoo recipe, or my second pH Balanced recipe. And there are plenty of other people who can’t make it work. Give it some time, experiment, and then do what feels right for your hair.
Hey Kate. Im 16 and I’ve been transitioning since April 2013. The back of my hair is natural but the front still has some relaxed ends. I get braids & leave them in for 2 or 3 months. & I oil my scalp 2 twice a Week. When I take my hair out I usually get blowouts at a Dominican salon & have them cut off some of my ends. This helps you not have to big chop until you have enough growth
Hi there – I would recommend using a clarifying shampoo to remove product buildup if any. Follow up with a moisturizing deep conditioner. From there, every 1-2 days, use the LOC or LOC method to moisturize your hair (try both to see which one works best for your hair). Wash your hair with a gentle shampoo and use a moisturizing deep conditioner every week. Follow the directions on the packaging. Avoid silicones. Examine your ends every 6-8 weeks and trim if needed. Use a gentle clarifying shampoo once a month or so. There is so much info out there about various routines, but this is a simple start that you can add to and adjust as you go. Keeping a journal to track what works and what doesn’t is great advice. Best of luck!
Well, I’m just saying thank you for the previous advice. So far on his journey I’ve successfully gone through 4 month and about 22 days of being natural. Now, at this very moment, my hair is about half my pinky finger or a lil more and I have then plat, pus my mom put some rubber bands in m hair (against the hairdressers wishes), oh, and my new hairdresser also died my hair black, because my hair is multi colored (black,brown & goldish red ), she also told me that all I needed to use was Wild Growth hair oil and keep plating my hair…and i think this artical is helpful not only to my hair but my skin…thank u
