I worked hard on these 5 inches. Also, I have dusty like brown hair. I want to color it wither a richer brown or maybe black. Is that a bad thing? My natural hair color makes my hair look as if it is dirty, dry, damaged and unhealthy. But, it is not, it just looks that way. It took me to go natural to realize that my hair is not damaged it is just an ugly brown. Can you suggest how to go about finding a naturalist beautician that doesn’t want you to pay with your arm and leg? I live in Anne Arundel County (Maryland near Baltimore).

I too have transitioned into the natural world without the BIG chop. I didn’t want to lose my length for those moments when I want to straighten my hair or rock a messy bun. It’s rough because now you have to deal with shrinkage closer to the roots and loose strands surrounding, but it is doable. I’ve been natural now for 1 year…and I absolutely LOVE my hair!! My nautal highlights are very profound and it’s very flattering. Especially since I’ve noticed my hair gets lighter as I get older. I have natural auburn and blonde highlights mixed heavily into my sandy brown hair. It’s always been naturally lighter in the warmer months, but it’s now lighter all year. Very clear informative article. My only problem is her support a broad scale public policy that would tell people what to eat. We are not a communist country. The United States is a republic – a constitutional republic where people believe that they can govern themselves. The notion that government should tell me what to eat is the absolute tyranny and tells me that this doctor needs to have a lesson in civics as well the pitfalls of scientism. I suspect she is thinking in terms of cost of care which is a utilitarian Marxist approach to human life. I don’t know what happened to this generation that they are so ignorant when it comes to Liberty and freedom versus government encroachment and parenting.
Due to some rather unfortunate salon perms I got in the past, my edges are weak. If I pull my hair back for more than a few days I notice thinning. Most of the protective styles that I see involve having the hair pulled back/up. This is great for protecting ends, but is there a protective style to protect edges? Right now I have my hair in twists and loose.
3. DETANGLE. This is extra important for 4C girls because the tight curl pattern of your hair can cause hairs to curl and coil around each other, causing tangles. Tangles lead to breakage, which hinders growth. Detangle regularly and gently, using a wide-toothed comb on damp hair (don’t use a brush!) Use conditioners to add slip and help with the process. When you find knots, don’t yank- use your fingers to gently pull hairs out of the knot.
